Yellow Sisters – biography

Yellow Sisters is a female a cappella group whose eclectic style incoprorates soul, funk, world music, jazz, and reggae. They have been working together since 2005, and achieved wide recognition the following year as the winners of the Colours of Ostrava new talent competition, leading to a recording contract with Indie Records. In December 2006, they released their debut album Singalana and toured extensively to promote it, performing in more than 100 concerts throughout the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Poland, Hungary and Sweden. The album was launched in March 2007 at the Retro Music Hall in Prague, where the group were filmed live for DVD, accompanied by more than twenty guests.

Over the past two and a half years, Yellow Sisters have performed in concert halls, theatres, clubs and also at various festivals, such as Colours of Ostrava, Music in the Park, Sázava Fest, Letní Letná, Mimoriál Kolín, and the Karlovy Vary Film Festival. Other significant achievements include a Homo Homini Award for exceptional contribution to the field of Human Rights, an appearance at the opening night of the One World Festival in 2006, a live recording from the award ceremony of the Czech Ministry of Culture 2007 and an appearance in the BBC travel documentary of Michael Palin’s New Europe.

At present Yellow Sisters have been preparing material for a new album and have been developing a theatrical presentation of their music. Their repertoire consists of a 60- 80 minute set of multi-genre songs with distinctly African flavour. One of their more memorable recent performances was their appearance in Senegal Meets Prague, an African music and dance program staged at the Ponec Theatre in Prague, and in Bazilika in Ceske Budejovice.
